
SELF TIMER, JUST THE TWO OF US
Each framed photograph from the Self Timer, Just the Two of Us series has its pair, a photograph which cannot be seen. It is on its back, facing the wall. Both shots were taken at the same time. They captured each other creation: The camera took a self-timer photo of my life partner and me, weil I was taking a photo of the camera.
Self-Timer, Just the Two of Us was created during the pandemic.
It is a continuation of a the Self-Timer photo series.

Nika Špan’s ‘Self-timer’ photographs are shot ‘from the hip’ with a mobile phone and show whatever lay before her at the moment her own portrait, together with her friends or family, was being taken by another camera. In the middle of the scene we can just make out the camera, and sometime its little red self-timer light. So it is as if we are having our pictures
taken too.
These are scenes that are thus more or less random. The ‘real’ picture, the group portrait, is slotted into the back of specially-made oak frames, facing the wall so we do not see them at all. What we see is the back side of the picture, the dark side. Nika Špan, ‘Self-timer’ series.
